Pilate had the power to release a criminal once a year. The question was whether it would be Barabbas or Jesus.
“”And they all cried out at once, saying, “”Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas””— who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder. Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. But they shouted, saying, “”Crucify Him, crucify Him!” ” Then he said to them the third time, “”Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”” Luke 23:18-22
The question is, who is Barabbas?
Barabbas was a rebellious, murderous sinner, and Jesus took the place of Barabbas. Wait, didn’t Jesus take our place? Well then, we are the criminals, sinners; we are Barabbas.
And Jesus was led away to take our punishment.
“For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.” 2 Cor 13:4
