What’s the Difference?
There is a difference in losing a spouse to death rather than through divorce. When someone is divorced they may have to defend their character, where it may not be an issue with a death, unless the person is accused of murdering their spouse.
Someone experiencing a loss through divorce is grieving, even if they were the one who left the marriage. Because of the grief there are things that are not good to say. For example: “Congratulations!”
If the person is coming out of an abusive situation, telling them you are proud of them does not make a grieving person feel better. So, what do we do to help our friend who is hurting because of a divorce? Listen.
“…A time to keep silence, and a time to speak.”
