As I was driving down the road listening to the latest Christian song on the radio, taping my hands to the beat of the music on the steering wheel, I heard the Lord say, “If I can’t trust you with the small things, how can I trust you with the big things.” I looked down at my speedometer and I was speeding.
I was not speeding intentionally, you know how some of us rationalize going five miles over the speed limit is okay (which I do often). My focus had been diverted, my intentions were good, listening to praise music. However, I was driven by the beat that drove me to go faster. I was drawn away from the praise and worship into the lusts of the flesh. How subtle and innocent. God impressed upon me these principals that day:
1) connection – stay connected to the one who knows the plan and path you should take, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. John 15:4-5, Jeremiah 29:11
2) don’t be pulled by the flesh, be alert at all times, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
3). Pay attention to the small things. When our focus is narrow there is no room for us to wander off. “Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you. Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Proverbs 4:25, Luke 16:10
