The Companion (Ruth)

“Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.” Ruth 3:3

We can learn a lot from Ruth. We see in Ruth 3:1 that Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law was seeking the best for Ruth. She gave her instructions to follow so that it would be well with her.

We can follow the same truths so it will be well with us.

First, we are taught to cleanse ourselves, so how do we do this, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” Psalm 119:9. Looking to God with our whole heart in all situations and abiding in them. We then see in Hebrews 4:12, “that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Second, through God’s word we see, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.” 1 John 2:20. We need to know the truth. We walk in the anointing of God as Christians to glorify Him.

Third, put on our best garment, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.1But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” Colossians 3:12-14

Notice Ruth followed what she was instructed to do by her Mother-in-law. Obedience brings blessings for both the receiver and the giver of the blessing. Ruth bore a son who was in the family line of Christ and Naomi was blessed with a close relative (Ruth 4:13-17).

“Let your garments always be white, And let your head lack no oil.” Ecclessiastes 9:8
