That Black Night

That Black Night

As the phone rang in the wee hours of the morning, I heard my mother tell me that my nephew had been killed in a car accident. My nephew was only 20 years old and five weeks older than my son. I was in a state of unbelief. How can one comprehend such news?

I remember walking into the funeral parlor together as a family to see him for the first time after the accident. My sister-in-law’s knees buckled and my brother held her up. I was still stunned and could not believe he was gone even though I was staring at his body.

People tell us that time will heal all wounds. This is not true. In time we may come to accept the change and hole in our lives that our loved one has left behind, but only Jesus can heal a wound so that we can function in a healthy manner. We can always choose to bury the wound, but there will always be a festering that keeps us unhealthy.

“…He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted…”  Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18  NKJV
