I missed Black Friday one year. It was moved to Thursday. I remember thinking how could that be, Thursday is Thanksgiving. Where is the grace in that?
Thanksgiving has been overtaken by retailers trying to secure a jump on the Christmas shopping season. Has America forgotten why we celebrate Thanksgiving? The first settlers that came to America suffered tremendous loss shortly after they arrived; Forty-four people died of a hundred and two. They were not only grieving their losses, but they faced significant food shortages. They each were allotted five kernels of corn a day to eat. So when a supply ship pulled into port, they had a lot to be thankful for. As a result, they set aside a day to give thanks for God’s provision.
O’ May we remember why we are thankful, “Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;[a] We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations. Psalm 100:3-5
