Idolatry is the extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone.
“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?” Ezekiel 14:3
Idols cause people to stumble into iniquity (wickedness and the punishment of the evil). Notice the idols were in their hearts. Scripture says that our hearts are deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). Their hearts turned to other things other than the Lord. We need to be careful that our hearts are not pulled away, guard our heart above all things (Proverbs 4:23).
We have a jealous God and He will not share His glory with another. God will even remove a person out of our lives if that person comes in place of Him. God must be first.
Many of the kings in the Old Testament struggled with idol worship or not tearing down the High places of idol worship (coming against idolatry). As a result, they stumbled, pride became their downfall.
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
