Dirty Feet

Dirty Feet

As I was driving home from a foot washing service on Maundy Thursday, I was contemplating what Jesus said to Peter, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Peter wanted Jesus to wash all of Him, because he loved Jesus so much. But Jesus said, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” (John 13: 8-11) Jesus was referring to Judas, who would betray him.

As we think about the depth of what Jesus was saying, we can see He was talking about our spiritual condition. When we are washed in the blood of Jesus, which cleanses us from all sin, then we are truly clean. When we walk in this world and are exposed to things that we may not want to see, we get dirt on our feet. We need to cleanse ourselves daily by repenting for the dirt; unforgiveness, being dishonoring in our relationships with others, a bad attitude, disobedience to God, or whatever it may be.
