He humbled himself. He portrayed himself all through his life as the lowest servant. Even on this day, the spring day in the city where all were rushing around to get ready for Passover.
“Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” John 13:1
The disciples all settled into the room probably tired from the Journey. But not Jesus. He picked up the towel and basin and bent down in front of the first disciple to wash his feet. Imagine the surprise, awkwardness and the questions that must have been arising in the disciples minds.
“Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”John 13:6-9
The cleansing, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.” The disciples had witnessed this cleansing in the many miracles Jesus had done.
“And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and [b]implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.”Immediately the leprosy left him.” Luke 5:12-13
Are you willing? Willing to let Jesus cleanse all of you? Ask Him today to take away all that is not of Him. The humble servant is willing.
