The New Year was first celebrated by the Babylonians around 2000 BC and later celebrated by the Romans in 153 BC. Both of these celebrations were to honor other gods (Marduk, the false god of creation of life, and Janus, the two faced God).
As we enter the New Year, we are not to celebrate or worship any god other than the one true God, Yahweh. What could we possibly worship other than God, you ask? Well, look at your New Year’s resolutions. Do they include God, or are they self-focused?
The top New Year resolutions for 2026 include Health (exercise more, eat better, mental well-being), Finances (saving more, budgeting), and personal growth (learning new skills), and last but not least, spending time with loved ones.
Have you ever thought of asking God what He desires? What He thinks your New Year’s resolution should be.
What do you think God would say?
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” John 13:34
“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8
Our relationship with God and others is the most important thing to God and should be prioritized over everything else.
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8
Now you are probably saying that is good, but I need to change things in my life… The Bible has all the answers. If you try to change things this new year, without God, you will have yet again unfulfilled resolutions.
Remember, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things” (1 Tim 4:8), God calls us to not focus on money (1 Tim 6:10, money is not bad, it is the love of money that is not good), we are to grow in Christ Jesus and in the things He desires (Is 28:23-26).
“if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Cor 5:17
Allow God to work in and through you this New Year!!
