Shame

Many carry shame today. Shame is an unpleasant self-conscious emotion often associated with negative self-evaluation, feelings of pain, distrust, and a sense of being guilty. Not able to measure up.

David said, “You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently. Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments. I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments. Psalm 119:4-7

Shame is the fruit of sin, and David felt shame for being unable to measure up to God’s word. None of us can measure up. Only through Jesus Christ and His righteousness can we do God’s will.

“For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 1 Peter 2:6

And then again, Romans 10:11 says anyone who believes in Jesus will not be put to shame.

Here, we see a clear distinction between the Old and New Testaments.

Jesus died on the cross and took all, including shame, to give us His glory. As we lay down our lives to Christ (trust in Him wholeheartedly), confess our sins, and turn to God, we live in glory.

“For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
