You can be self-led or led by the Holy Spirit. Being led by the Holy Spirit requires a conscious decision on your part. It requires you to lay down your will and desires and submit to God and His desires daily. Being regularly led by the spirit is a sign of Christian maturity.  

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14)
