“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Cor 4:17-18
We will all have trouble from day to day. However, the meaning of affliction here is a little different. The word affliction, thlipsis, means tribulation, anguish, burden, or oppression. Paul had his fill of affliction; he was beaten, enprisoned, stoned, etc. When we have anguish or tribulation, we believe that no one understands and has no clue what we are going through, and we tend to focus on the issue at hand. But Paul is saying when our focus is on the Lord, the affliction is light and momentary, and it accomplishes a good work in us.
Jesus tells us, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
